I think April Fool's is a straight thing. Most surprises are, really. "The surprise" is a little traumatic.
Enjoying "the surprise"; the sudden switch of reality.
"...surprise in the sense that this term has in analysis, it is something which is more or less related to the unconscious..." Jacques Lacan, Seminar VIII: Transference.
To enjoy the surprise, "the surprise" needs to be better than reality.
What's a surprise that's worse than the original?
The surprise is switching in essence what's behind the door.
It's an act of swapping by a hidden agency.
"The surprise" itself is an attack, as such; it's a sudden attack specifically on expectations, which are a kind of perspective.
"The surprise" marks an interruption to expectations, which signify an awareness of repetition.
"The surprise" as an act of love is interesting because the surprise is an attack.

A prank is interesting because it is a negative surprise. A prank is most effective when its admission brings relief. The surprise is that the surprise is over. It's a surprise on top of a surprise.
But sometimes, the surprise is that the surprise continues on, as such.
